| Santorini traditional settlements |
 This is a top attraction of the island that many tourists usually miss. The most beautiful and most preserved settlements of Santorini are not that visible. That's not the case in most Cyclades islands, but in Santorini those settlements were built in the banks of riverbeds; those locations offered protection from the pirates invasions, and, thus had to be somehow invisible. Nice examples are the settlements of Vothonas , Megalochori and Karterados.Another well-preserved settlement is that of “Kato Fira” (meaning in Greek the settlement underneath Fira). It is located just underneath the Cathedral of Fira, on the cliffs of the caldera. The architecture of the houses is in perfect harmony with the landscape and the view to the caldera and volcano is panoramic. Similar settlements are those of Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia as well, but these are places you will more probably go! This time, therefore, try to get lost for a while in the narrow streets of Kato Fira, Karterados, Vothonas or Megalochori...! |
