Santorini Skaros Castle in Imerovigli |
Located just in front of Imerovigli and once being the capital of Santorini, Skaros was built by the Venetians, which dominated Santorini in 1207 A.D. It has never been conquered, but it has been destroyed by the Minoan volcanic eruption in 1650 B.C. and the earthquake in 1817 A.D.
Today, you can see what remains of the old Medieval castle.
The path, which starts from Imerovigli, heads south and then continues west, terminates at the chapel of Virgin Theoskepasti, which seems as been suspended from the rock. |
