It has been suggested that Perissa is located at the ancient city of Eleusis, which was mentioned by the geographer Ptolemy as one of the towns of Santorini. Findings show that in Perissa ancient city was found as early as 1836, during excavations. Over the ruins of this ancient city built during the Byzantine period another city, which must be very rich, which is evidenced by the existence there of a large basilica ruins of Agia Irini. The city estimated that arrived in decline during the reign of Leo III of Isavrou. Perhaps the decline of the city to be associated directly with the volcanic eruption of 726 in the Old Burned or indirectly by the involvement of residents in the revolution of 727 against the iconoclast emperor as a sign of divine wrath against whom was the explosion.
