Karterados is a village of Santorini and it is located 1,5 Km south east to Fira, on the main road to Messaria. The population was 1,089 inhabitants at the 2001 census.
The traditional settlemet of Karterados has been built within an old gully and the houses are in-cave. Sources of 18th and 19ty century cite Karterados as a village populated mainly by seafarers. Karterados most probably means in Greek karteri = trap, because the inhabitants of Karterados were making “traps” for the pirates. |
