In the ancient years, it was the port of Ancient Thera and in those days it was called Ia. With a long black sand beach, Kamari is today the second most popular beach on the island.
Local celebrations :

Ancient Thira
Ancient Thira is literally above Kamari. There are busses available to take you to the top but you can walk or drive. The walk takes about an hour and is quite steep. The drive is up a cobble-stone cliff-side twisty road and requires not only confidence behind the wheel but the ability to ignore your scared passengers who are actually looking down. Another choice is to have a donkey-ride! That's the old way of transportation in Santorini and still exists! The site is open from 10.00 - 14.30 most days (closed on Mondays). |
