Akrotiri, locates 15 Km away from Fira has been famous worldwide for its famous archaelogical sites of Greece, During the middle ages, it has been one of the castles of Santorini.
Akrotiri, has been famous worldwide due to the Pre-historic settlement discovered by Spyros Marinatos in 1967. The Great Minoan eruption of 1650 B.C. buried under tones of pumice the flourishing civilization of that city. The excavations gave evidence and a lot of findings of a whole civilization of that era.
During the middle ages, Akrotiri has been one of the castles of Santorini and has been called “La Ponta”. “Goulas” of Akrotiri was in the the centre of the settlement, but it has been totally destroyed by the earthquake of 1956. In 1956 Duke of Naxos gave Akrotiri to the Gozzadini family, that originated from Bologna, Italy. 2 factors played role in the possession of Akrotiri by Gozzadini family for a long time, even during the Turkish bondage; at first, Gozzadini originated from Bologna and not from Venice, that during that period was under with Ottoman empire. in addition, Akrotiri's castle had been developed over the years very effective methods of defense against its enemies. Eventually, Turks conquered Akrotiri in 1617.
Beaches of Akrotiri
Red Beach, the best known beach of Akrotiri, is located close to the Akrotiri excavations, but one can reach it only on foot or by travelling on a little boat. The whole area of the beach is covered by majestic red rocks and that's where the name “Red Beach” comes from. Also, “Mesa Pigadia” is another beach of Akrotiri and can be accessed only by a dirt road. “White Beach” is located next to the Red Beach and you can reach it of you take the little boat from the Red Beach.
